Description

This pair of large tables comes from Palazzo Corsini in Florence (but originally they were almost certainly in the family’s palazzo in Via della Lungara in Rome). The vigorous carving has a late-baroque emphasis even though they date well into the 18th century: the legs are in the shape of an “S” with protruding knees engraved with rocailles plant motifs and are connected by a rung at the center of which a rococo shell is placed. The Roman inspiration of these pieces is further confirmed by the thick African onyx tabletop typical of the capital, which would seem excessive in other Italian cities but here is an indicator of grandeur.
